Why for the Shipping?

Why do we identify characters with chemistry on TV programmes and then hope they'll get together (although often we enjoy the chase more than the actual resolution)? It's as if we actively seek out these relationships - is it just because it's a recognisable and cliched "trope", or is it a natural extension of real life?

It's a natural extension. We enjoy drama, well just as long as we're not at the centre of it, and tv gives us the dose of drama we want.

I'm inclined to say natural extension as well. It's a rare person who hasn't occasionally enjoyed gossip about the will-they-or-won't-they potential of people they know.

Weirdly, I've found that, as a fanfic writer/reader (and perhaps as a slasher in particular), I don't really "ship", per se. Don't get me wrong: I like a little drama in my shows. It's just that I'm not as invested in whether two characters ultimately get together on screen, because I know that I or like-minded fans can always PUT them together off screen. (That's why I think it might stem from my slash background in particular: I'm not used to the idea that my favourite couples COULD potentially get together in canon.)
